Lakeland Terrier Colors, Shedding, Full Size and Average Weight

Externally Lakeland Terrier resembles welsh terrier, but differs from it with its smaller sizes. Lakeland Terriers are small and have sturdy build. Dogs' height usually does not exceed 37 centimeters, while the females' is about 2.5 centimeters smaller than males'. Weight of an adult dog is up to 8 kg, females weigh about one kilogram lighter. The hair is thick, wiry, while the soft undercoat. As for the colors, they can be quite diverse: this Lakeland Terrier is different from other burrowing terriers. There may be both monochrome and black & brown color. The first include red, blue, black, liver and wheat-colored, and the second - grizzly and red, blue, black and liver. Occasionally, there are dark brown and mahogany colors.

Lakeland Terrier Breed Characteristics, Information and Facts

Lakeland Terrier is a breed of hunting dogs, bred by crossing Bedlington Terriers with Old English haired terrier. Like most other terriers, Lakeland appeared in the UK - in mountainous terrain called the "Lake District".

From the name of this area, in fact, the breed got its name: Lakeland - a transliteration of the phrases lake land, which in Russian is translated as the Lake District. However, in its native Lakeland Terrier was originally called differently - Patterdale Terrier, and only in 1912 the year of the first performance at the dog show, the breed got its present name. Even after 16 years, Lakeland Terrier was recognized by English Kennel Club, and in 1937, FCI accepted the breed standard.

Originally, this breed is deduced for hunting burrowing animals, but in the present conditions Lakeland Terrier kept mainly as pets. However, the hunting habits of the dog have not been lost till this day.
